STEFAN KAMINSKI & GABRIEL VORMSTEIN
THE HOLES OF THE WORLD AND THE WHOLE WORLD
In their work, the two Berlin-based artists share an affinity towards Neo
Povera (Germano Celant) and its use of non-traditional everyday materials
and unconventional processes. Hard foam insulation boards or newspaper
spreads become support structures to further explore and deconstruct
painterly abstraction and figuration.
„Mr. Vormstein’s feeling for slight, impoverished materials and his emphasis on
drawing are shared with many of his contemporaries. But his historicist mixing
and matching seems typical of an older generation of male, German painters. It
makes an intriguing combination (…).“ Roberta Smith, NY Times
Stefan Kaminski meticulously embosses seemingly archaic motives into his
artistic material. He uses various everyday tools (hammer, screw driver, cutter,
etc.) to generate sculptural paintings which question the nature of what it
means to be making art, what place the artwork has within the gallery walls and
the relationship with commercialism.
