Markus Weisbeck is consistently questioning the processes and tools involved in the development and exploration of the image, taking the visual principles of 20th century modernism as base. More specifically, the experiments of form and composition found in the libraries at the Ulm School of Design, Germany and Black Mountain College in Chicago, America.


Based on a research process that is valued as an elementary, constituent part of the artistic work and not merely a citation in an art historical sense, Weisbeck is consistently reformulating how textual production leads to image construction, and in turn sculptural forms. With this depth of focus on revising past modernist models, Weisbeck’s conceptual approach demonstrates an awareness that visual aesthetic innovation is best achieved with analogue techniques and traditional visual concepts set in relation with the possibilities offered by digital cultural production.

Markus Weisbeck is a professor for graphic design at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and co-founder of the Space for Visual Research. His studio, Surface, innovatively addressing composition aesthetics, contextual crossovers, and hybrid design experimentation.
