The immersive situations of Catherine Lorent challenge well-established categories to combine painting, drawing, sculpture, performance, music, and theatrical settings into installations brimming with visual and acoustic references and residues. Expressive drawings are presented with suspended guitars, ceiling pictures hover, and poetry from the previous night’s performance linger, often alongside grand pianos.
Taking inspiration from the Baroque, Lorent acknowledges that the genre is, despite appearances, underpinned by a systematic structure. In identifying music as the Baroque’s most poignant form, Lorent plays the Rock guitar to create atmospheric effects from the most reduced formal vocabulary: drone. A synthesis of real-time monotony with that of the exaggerated is also present in her paintings and drawings, visualized through overlapping layers of geometrical forms, monochromatic surfaces, and ornamental figurations. All in Lorent’s mise-en scene is produced not without a touch of humor offering distance from reality and deeper relation with it.
