“In my work, I try to establish temporary working arrangements that dissipate again, in order to avoid fixed categories, disciplines and classification. I want to propose a non-linear understanding of information based on a micro linkage of accidents as much as on systems.”
Dave Hullfish Bailey produces abstract spatial mappings for reading information speculatively. Light, witty in appearance, his work is based on a depth of research into socio-political organisational structures, re-configuring their past facts, causalities and chronologies but retaining echoes of their social goals. Indeed his sculptural activity involving a sprawl of image and text has been described as a kind of “heuristic cartography” where language moulds the cartography and links disparate discursive places, materials, and sites of social relations together into a multi-faceted network, criss-crossing possibilities for idiosyncratic subjectivities and non-hierarchical structures and non-structural information too.
Bailey’s installations build as a composite for thinking through the precariousness of society as a superstructure and its fragility in the face of increasing natural, political and social disasters. Within this sculptural system, object and subject are receptive to recombination and in reflection question what kinds of social entities we can assert as existing and which we can bring into existence.
